Job Description
Four Winds Staffing is seeking a qualified General Surgery Physician to provide contract physician services at Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. This position will support the Surgery Department by providing elective, emergent, inpatient, outpatient, and on-call surgical services.
The selected physician will provide comprehensive surgical care for adult and pediatric patients, including pre-operative and post-operative care, emergency surgical evaluation, inpatient rounding, clinic coverage, operating room coverage, and consultation services. The ideal candidate will be experienced, dependable, clinically independent, and comfortable working in a fast-paced healthcare environment serving a diverse patient population.
Schedule Details
Coverage may include:
● Weekday 24-hour call, including 12 hours in-house and 12 hours on call
● Variable weekday shifts, typically 10-hour shifts, for outpatient clinic, operating room, or endoscopy coverage
● Weekend on-call coverage from Saturday 7:00 AM through Monday 7:00 AM
● Weekend in-house coverage of approximately 5 hours each on Saturday and Sunday
● Call-back services when called back in-house, with a minimum of 1 hour
Schedules may vary based on hospital, clinic, and patient care needs.
Responsibilities
● Provide onsite surgical coverage on a rotating basis
● Serve as a General Surgeon for ambulatory clinic, operating room, endoscopy, inpatient, emergency, and on-call surgical services
● Evaluate adult and pediatric patients for surgical conditions
● Develop and implement appropriate treatment and surgical care plans
● Provide comprehensive pre-operative and post-operative surgical care
● Perform major and minor surgical procedures within accepted national standards
● Provide emergency surgical care as needed
● Evaluate inpatients daily and document findings in the medical record
● Conduct surgery clinics and perform minor surgical procedures in a clinic setting
● Provide consultations to other providers as requested
● Instruct and counsel patients and family members regarding care plans and health needs
● Work closely with nurses, allied health professionals, social workers, health educators, and other care team members
● Provide guidance and instruction to mid-level providers working in the General Surgery Department
● Participate in teaching activities as needed
● Complete medical records and required documentation in a timely and accurate manner
● Comply with all facility policies, procedures, credentialing requirements, and applicable healthcare standards
Common procedures may include open and endoscopic biliary procedures and treatment of diabetic soft tissue infections. Experience with upper and lower endoscopy for diagnostic and screening purposes is preferred but not required.
Required Qualifications
● Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree
● Completion of a General Surgery residency
● Active and unrestricted medical license in Arizona, another U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico
● Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Surgery or American Osteopathic Board of Surgery
● Current Basic Life Support certification
● Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification
● Ability to obtain and maintain clinical privileges in General Surgery
● Ability to pass required background, fingerprinting, exclusion, credentialing, and security clearance processes
● Ability to comply with Indian Health Service and facility requirements, policies, procedures, and medical staff bylaws
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience providing surgical services in a hospital, government, tribal health, Indian Health Service, or similar healthcare setting
● Experience with adult and pediatric surgical patients
● Experience with emergency, inpatient, outpatient, clinic, operating room, and on-call coverage
● Experience performing upper and lower endoscopy
● Strong documentation skills and familiarity with electronic health records
● Ability to work effectively with patients and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
Required Skills
● Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic ability
● Knowledge of general surgery principles, emergency care, minor and major surgery, preventive care, and therapeutic treatment
● Ability to collect, organize, document, and communicate patient information clearly
● Ability to assess patients’ physical, emotional, psychosocial, and family health needs
● Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, including desired effects, side effects, and complications
● Ability to remain calm, professional, tactful, and reliable in stressful situations
● Strong leadership and communication skills
● Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
● Commitment to quality care, patient safety, and accurate clinical documentation
Credentialing and Clearance Requirements
Selected candidates must provide required documentation and complete the applicable credentialing and clearance process before beginning work. Required documentation may include:
● Current resume or CV
● Medical license and professional certifications
● BLS and ACLS certifications
● Education and training documentation
● Government-required forms
● Two valid forms of identification
● Fingerprinting and background clearance documentation
● Required facility or federal training certificates
No services may be provided until the candidate has completed required credentialing, privileging, clearance, and badging requirements.
Work Environment
This position is located onsite at Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The physician will work in a hospital and clinical care environment and must comply with all applicable infection control, safety, documentation, credentialing, and patient care standards.
